All You Need To Know About STDs
There's a lot of stigma and misunderstanding when it comes to STDs, but here's the truth: there are many types, some more serious than others. The good news is that all sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can generally be treated and cured with medications. So whether you're wondering about the common symptoms and treatments of different STDs or wanting to know your risk factors for contracting an STD, we've got you covered!
The different types of STDs
When it comes to STD prevention - understanding the different types helps us do just that! The list:
- Viral infections like herpes, HIV and Hepatitis virus
- Bacterial infections like syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia
- Parasites are much less common STDs like trichomoniasis and pubic lice,
Keep in mind
While sexual intercourse is the most common way to catch an STD, there are other ways to transmit an infection too. Kissing, or any kind of close physical contact with someone who has an infection can all increase your risk, even from breastfeeding mothers to their children.
What are the symptoms
STD symptoms vary depending on the type of STD and some may go unnoticed. Each type of STD can present in different ways—from no symptoms at all to painful sores or blisters. Also, some STDs may not show up right away or have obvious signs or symptoms. Common symptoms include but are not limited to: rashes, itching and burning sensation in the genital area, pain or discomfort during urination, abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina, sores or blisters around the genitals and anus, swollen glands in the genital area and flu-like symptoms such as fever and fatigue. These symptoms are often mild; however they can cause serious health problems if left untreated.
How to treat STDs
If you or someone you know think they may have an STD, it's important to seek medical advice promptly. Treatment for STDs depends on the type and infection severity, but in general it’ll involve antibiotics or other medications to get rid of the infection. Keep in mind that anyone who has been exposed should also be tested and treated if necessary – preventing further spread is key! Always practice safer sex and regularly get checked for STDs as part of your overall health plan for a safe, healthy sex life.
How to prevent getting an STD in the first place
The best way to prevent getting an STD is to be monogamous with a partner who is also monogamous, or to practice safe sex by using condoms. But, let's face it, that's not always possible or realistic. So, here are a few tips on how to reduce your risk of catching an STD:
- Get tested regularly and ask your partners to do the same. Knowing your status and your partner's status is the best way to reduce your risk.
- Limit the number of sexual partners you have. The more partners you have, the greater your risk of exposure.
- Use condoms consistently and correctly. Condoms are the best way to reduce your risk of catching an STD. If you're going to have sex, use a condom every time.
- Avoid sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of catching HIV/AIDS or other blood-borne diseases.
- Get vaccinated against HPV and Hepatitis B. These two vaccinations can help reduce your risk of contracting these diseases.
