Frequently asked questions

What is a Vitamin D injection?

A Vitamin D injection is a high-dose intramuscular (IM) injection designed to replenish low vitamin D levels. Valeo uses DEVIT-3 IM, containing 300,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per mL. It is administered by a DHA-licensed healthcare professional following a consultation and medical assessment.

Who can take the Vitamin D injection?

The injection may be suitable for adults with a confirmed low vitamin D level, particularly those whose levels are below 30 ng/mL.

What are the symptoms of Low vitamin D?

It may also be recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms associated with low vitamin D, such as:

  • Bone, muscle or joint discomfort
  • Muscle weakness
  • Persistent tiredness or low energy
  • Limited exposure to sunlight
  • Difficulty absorbing vitamin D from food or oral supplements

Final eligibility is determined by a healthcare professional based on your blood test results, medical history and current medications.

What vitamin D level is required to take the injection?

Valeo’s Vitamin D injection service is intended for individuals with a confirmed vitamin D level below 30 ng/mL.

  • Below 30 ng/mL: You may be eligible for Vitamin D treatment following a medical consultation.
  • Below 20 ng/mL: This generally indicates a more significant deficiency. Valeo may recommend the Deficiency Recovery Pack, which includes three shots administered 21 days apart, subject to clinical approval.

A recent vitamin D blood test may be required to confirm your level and determine the appropriate treatment plan.

Where on the body is the Vitamin D injection given?

DEVIT-3 is administered as an intramuscular—or IM—injection. This means the injection is given directly into a suitable muscle selected by the healthcare professional, commonly a large muscle in the hip or upper buttock area.

The exact injection site is selected based on your body structure, safety and clinical suitability.

Why is the Vitamin D injection given into a muscle?

DEVIT-3 is specifically formulated for intramuscular administration. Injecting the medication into muscle tissue allows the vitamin D to be deposited and gradually absorbed into the body.

The injection must be administered using the correct intramuscular technique by a qualified healthcare professional. It should not be self-administered or injected into a vein.

What are the potential benefits of a Vitamin D injection?

Correcting low vitamin D levels may help:

  • Support strong bones and teeth
  • Improve calcium absorption
  • Support normal muscle strength and function
  • Support immune-system function
  • Reduce deficiency-related fatigue and low energy
  • Support muscle recovery and general wellbeing

Results vary depending on your starting vitamin D level, overall health and the cause of the deficiency.

Do I need a blood test before receiving the injection?

Yes, a recent blood test is recommended to measure your 25-hydroxyvitamin D level. This helps the healthcare professional confirm whether the injection is appropriate and determine whether you require a single treatment or a structured recovery plan.

You should also tell the healthcare professional about any medical conditions, allergies, supplements or medications you are currently taking

How quickly does a Vitamin D injection start working?

The injection begins replenishing vitamin D after it is administered, but the time required to notice an improvement varies from person to person.

Some individuals may notice improvements in energy or muscle discomfort within a few days or weeks. However, blood vitamin D levels may take longer to improve. A follow-up blood test may be recommended to evaluate your response.

How many Vitamin D injections will I need?

The number and frequency of injections depend on your vitamin D level, symptoms, medical history and response to treatment.

Individuals with vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL may be considered for Valeo’s Deficiency Recovery Pack, which includes three injections administered 21 days apart. The treatment schedule must be approved by a healthcare professional and should not be repeated without medical supervision.

Is the Vitamin D shot safe, and who should avoid it?

Vitamin D injections are generally well tolerated when prescribed and administered by a qualified healthcare professional. Temporary pain, tenderness, redness or swelling may occur at the injection site.

Because DEVIT-3 contains a high dose of Vitamin D3, it may not be appropriate for people with certain conditions, including:

  • High calcium levels in the blood or urine
  • Vitamin D toxicity or already elevated vitamin D levels
  • Certain kidney conditions or kidney stones
  • Sarcoidosis or other conditions affecting vitamin D metabolism
  • An allergy to Vitamin D3 or another ingredient in the injection
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless specifically approved by a doctor

A Valeo Health expert will review your medical information during the consultation before confirming your treatment.
